Birch Mug

This is the OG mug of Mud & Wood. The birch tree design subtly illustrates a love of nature with the simplicity of only a black underglaze and a blue food-safe glaze. Stoneware keeps drinks hot longer than standard ceramic or glass mugs because of its dense clay structure and thick walls. Mugs are approximately 4.15 inches tall and hold at least 15 ounces, so you don't have to make as many trips to the coffee pot! 

Background:  Each mug was pulled on the wheel, bottom trimmed and hand-pulled handle attached before bisque firing. Using a technique called sgraffito, the black underglaze was painted on this hand-pulled speckled stoneware mug then birch trees were carved from the underglaze by hand before bisque firing.  Food-safe glaze is applied prior to firing in the kiln for the second time. From start to finish, each piece takes at least 3 weeks to finish, usually more, depending on weather. 

Care:  My wish is that people use...no love to use pieces that I have made. The mugs are microwave safe. Take caution, the stoneware can get hot in the microwave. They are also dishwasher safe as long as they are on the top shelf and aren't touching other items.
